Explanation

Lysosomes contain strong hydrolytic (digestive) enzymes that act as the cell's digestive system. They break down particles taken in by pinocytosis or phagocytosis, and also break down old or damaged cell components. Their importance is demonstrated by the metamorphosis of frog larvae, where lysosomes break down the tadpole tail so its molecules can be reused.
