Four Reasons Maintenance Costs More

1 pts

volume_mute

Which of the following are among the documented reasons that adding features during maintenance tends to be more expensive than during initial development? Select all that apply.

A new team has to spend time understanding the program before they can implement changes

Maintenance teams are always given more budget than development teams

Separating maintenance from development removes the incentive to write maintainable software

Maintenance work always takes exactly the same time regardless of system age

As programs age, their structure tends to degrade, making them harder to understand and change

Maintenance work is often considered unpopular and assigned to less experienced staff

Lack of Incentive for Maintainable Code

1 pts

volume_mute

Why might a development team have little incentive to write maintainable software when maintenance is handled by a different company?

Because maintenance contracts always specify that code must be deliberately hard to maintain

Because the development team gets no direct benefit from investing extra effort to make software easier to maintain, since they will not be responsible for maintaining it

Because maintainable code is always illegal to write under software licensing law

Because writing maintainable code always takes the exact same amount of time as writing unmaintainable code

Poor Image of Maintenance Work

1 pts

volume_mute

Why does maintenance work being seen as a less skilled process create additional cost and risk?

It is often allocated to the least experienced staff, who may also lack experience with the obsolete languages used by older systems

Maintenance staff are required to have more years of experience than development staff in every case

It is illegal to assign experienced staff to maintenance projects

Maintenance work is always automated, removing the need for any staff at all

Solving the Status Problem of Maintenance

1 pts

volume_mute

According to the text, what is the only long-term solution to the problem of organizations treating development and maintenance as separate, unequal activities?

Thinking of systems as evolving throughout their lifetime through a continual development process, giving maintenance the same status as new development

Permanently banning all software maintenance activities

Requiring every company to use exactly the same programming language forever

Replacing all maintenance staff with automated AI tools that require no human oversight

Addressing Degraded Structure Through Reengineering

1 pts

volume_mute

Which of the following techniques can help address the problem of degraded system structure in aging programs? Select all that apply.

Permanently freezing the system and refusing all further changes

Refactoring to improve the quality of the system code

Architectural transformations to adapt the system to new hardware

Software reengineering techniques to improve system structure and understandability

Deleting all documentation to simplify the codebase

Two Reasons Businesses Resist Investing in Maintainability

1 pts

volume_mute

Which of the following are reasons given for why businesses are often reluctant to spend more on development to reduce future maintenance costs? Select all that apply.

Managers are incentivized around quarterly or annual spending plans, so short-term cost increases are visible but long-term gains are unmeasurable at the same time

Long-term maintainability savings are always larger than short-term development cost increases and easy to measure precisely

Most businesses have unlimited budgets and therefore choose not to think about long-term costs at all

Developers are usually not responsible for maintaining the systems they build, so they see no personal benefit from extra effort

Integrating Development and Maintenance

1 pts

volume_mute

Which type of organization is best positioned to integrate development and maintenance so that the same team remains responsible for software throughout its lifetime?

Companies that outsource 100% of both development and maintenance to unrelated third parties

Custom software companies that always hand off every system to a different external maintenance vendor

Organizations that never update their software after the first release

Companies that develop and maintain their own software products, such as in-house software teams at large technology companies
