Scope of Environment Assessment

1 pts

volume_mute

When assessing the technical environment of a legacy system, what should be included beyond the application software itself?

The hardware and all associated support software, such as compilers, debuggers, and development environments needed to maintain the system

Only the physical office space where servers are stored

Only the personal opinions of the original system architect

Only the original purchase price of the hardware

Key Question

Are there problems interfacing the system with other current systems?

Is the supplier still in business and financially stable?

How old is the hardware and software, and is it increasingly obsolete?

Does the hardware or support software crash and force system restarts frequently?

Match each environment assessment factor to the question it is primarily concerned with.

Supplier Stability Concern

1 pts

volume_mute

Why is supplier stability an important factor when assessing the environment of a legacy system, even though it is not strictly a technical characteristic?

Supplier stability only matters for systems used in retail businesses

If a supplier is no longer in business, their hardware or software may not be supported, potentially forcing the organization to replace those systems

Supplier stability has no real impact on legacy system decisions and is only included for legal reasons

A stable supplier guarantees the legacy system will never need any maintenance again

Application Software Quality Factors

1 pts

volume_mute

Which of the following are factors used to assess the technical quality of application software in a legacy system? Select all that apply.

Whether modern compilers are available for the programming language used

Understandability of the source code, including how complex the control structures are

Availability of personnel with skills to maintain the application

Whether configuration management tracks all versions of all system parts

Availability of test data and records of regression tests

Whether system documentation is complete, consistent, and current

Whether there is an explicit data model and whether data is duplicated across files

The exact number of times the original developers were promoted

Data Volume as a Quality Indicator

1 pts

volume_mute

Why does the volume of data processed by a legacy system serve as a useful indicator for assessing its quality?

Higher data volume always means the system was built using better software engineering practices

Data volume has no relationship whatsoever to system quality or maintenance cost

As data volume increases over time, inconsistencies and errors in that data tend to increase, and cleaning up old data is expensive and time-consuming

Systems with more data are automatically easier to replace than those with less data

Number of Change Requests as Quality Indicator

1 pts

volume_mute

Why is a high accumulated number of system change requests considered an indicator of low system quality?

Because more change requests automatically mean the system has more total users

Because system changes usually corrupt the system structure, making further changes progressively more difficult

Because change requests have no relationship to system structure whatsoever

Because change requests always indicate that a system was designed incorrectly from the very first day

Objective Assessment vs. Organizational Politics

1 pts

volume_mute

True or False: In practice, decisions about what to do with a legacy system are always based purely on objective technical and business value assessment, with no influence from organizational or political considerations.

Budget Constraints and Maintenance Decisions

1 pts

volume_mute

How can a lack of available budget for system transformation affect a legacy system decision, even if transformation would be the technically preferred option?

Budget shortages automatically convert the system into an open-source project

If no budget is available for transformation in a given year, system maintenance may be continued even though this results in higher long-term costs

Budget constraints have no influence on legacy system decisions at all

A lack of budget always forces immediate scrapping of the system within 24 hours
